In the morning we met Tom Eustache from the Simpcw community. Together we walked over to an existing trail. The trail should be widened so that it is suitable for beginners.
We got an introduction into building sustainable trails based on the IMBA standards and started building. Some important steps within the building process are:
- Having a suitable tread width for the intended user
- Digging down to mineral soil for true sustainability
- Broadcast the organic material out of the way
- Get rid of roots and rocks if a green trail rating
- Out slope the trail for drainage (a nice 5% angle slightly down sloping for water to run away)
- Tamp the dirt down to compact the tread
We experienced that trail building is a very physical job but we had loads of fun!
