Day 9: TRAIL BUILDING SIMPCW

Day 9  The Build

It was a fun and hard working day.

The group got up early  for full trail building day.  This is where we would apply all the leanings from other trail site visits, policy work and trail standards.

10am met at Simpcw Territory. Thomas (left) and Craig (right)

Step 1 - Flag the vision. The team worked on different tasks.
Thomas would layout the vision for the trail based on using terrain features that were found on our trail layout session, and his consultation with the Simpcw and their desired type of trail.

Step 2 – Clear  the trail corridor. Here Thomas used his chainsaw saw.

Step 3 – Clear the cut debris from the corridor. Take the debris at least 2 or 3 meters from the corridor.

Step 4 – Clear what were missed from the first cut. The includes small pieces of branches.

Step 5 – Pin Flag the trail. Here we put the pink flags in the center of the trail.  Dependent on builder, preference, you can also choose put the flags at one or two sides of the trail.

Step 6 – Define the trail edges, one feet wide from each side of the pink flags.
This will be your 'trail tread'.

Step 7: Remove the organic soil,  digging until you see the mineral soil.

After a while, it started to rain, and it was heavier and heavier.

Each day we would head back to our base camp at Dunn Lake.
